Vila do Conde is a good example of how a resort can be developed with some sympathy towards the original features. Result: the newer part with smart avenues, gardens and eateries and the old town a little way away up Rio Ave, with its market, fishing port, cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. The working shipbuilders on the opposite bank are testament to the town's long history in this craft since the C15th.

Overlooking all is the Convento de Santa Clara, dating from the C14th and complete with the tombs of its founders, Dom Afonso Sanches (son of King Dinis) and his wife Dona Teresa, and into which runs an aqueduct which used to carry water over 999 arches (the builders thought one more might offend the Almighty) and a distance of 5km.

Also of note is the Manueline Igreja Matriz, built in Spanish and Portuguese styles and topped by a Moorish dome. There are lacemaking and embroidery and nautical museums, more churches and many other places well worth a visit.

Most of the new development has taken place on the northern side towards Povoa de Varzim, an altogether more modern proposition 3km to the north, but along the way the beaches are fine and sandy.

The Metro runs from Porto (Estadio de Dragao about 1 hour ) through Vila do Conde up to Povoa de Varzim, so a day out in Porto or excursion to Povoa are easy with no need to drive.
