Fine manor house set in 4,000 sqm grounds with far-reaching views in village of Santa Marta, about 10 minutes' drive east of Viana do Castelo. Amorosa and Cabedelo beaches about 11km and golf at Ponte de Lima (25km), Estela (35km) and Quinta da Barca (30km). Just around the corner is the Camelo restaurant, renowned for regional cuisine, and there's another eatery, if rather less exalted, within a few metres.
This old house has belonged to a local family for many years and has loads of antiques and atmosphere. Large enclosed gardens with granite-edged pool about 12x8m, 1.6m deep, lawns, avenues with vines over, an orchard and covered terrace with kiwi-fruit vines (masses of autumn fruit) and circular stone table in centre, offering welcome shade throughout the day.
Stairs up to long covered terrace with bougainvillea (perfect for dining outdoors) and then into entrance hall, off which sitting room with fireplace and woodburner, comfortable furniture and precious artefacts, library, dining room then into scullery and kitchen with wood-burning range, large cooker, fridge, freezer, microwave, pantry with water heaters and laundry/utility room, washing machine and dishwasher.
The old servants' quarters now provide twin bedroom ensuite shower on ground floor. Upstairs via balustraded stairs with hanging tapestries depicting the family's coat of arms to landing with doors to terrace over rear of house and to right master suite with large twin bedroom and bathroom. In the other direction are three bedrooms (1 double and 2 twins) and bathroom. Sash windows and traditional shutters converted to contain insect screens. Plenty of wardrobes throughout plus electric heaters (cost included in rental).
The property is securely gated (coat of arms over) and alarmed with a door entry system and includes WIFI internet access. Garage converted to games area with table tennis plus badminton and volleyball outside. Under arches near pool is a shower and dressing room. Children's play area with swings. Walled eating area with summer barbecue. All in all very special for a spot of gracious living Portuguese-style.
Linen (except beach/pool towels) provided. Maid service weekly and weekly linen change. Car parking area in garden. Preferred arrival Monday 1600, depart 1000, June-September. Other days by arrangement. Minimum booking 5 nights, except 7 mid-June to mid-September.
